Bourne Rotary's 'Run in the Woods' 3k and 10k races attract runners from across the region

Nearly 600 runners took part in a running event at Bourne Woods on Sunday (April 14).

Organised by The Rotary Club of Bourne, the annual ‘Run in the Woods’ offered people of all ages the chance to compete along the trails of Bourne Woods.

Among those taking part in the 3k ‘fun run’ was Stuart Storey who ran dressed as Wonderwoman, as well as children on their Easter holidays - some aged only five and six - right up to parents and grandparents.

Stamford Striders running club was well represented, with a dozen of the club’s Juniors section taking part.

Despite this, it was 16-year-old Nene Valley Harrier Samuel Staines who came first in a time of just 10.15, breaking the course record by 33 seconds. Fifteen-year-old Bourne Town Harrier Conor Ely was second, crossing the line in 10.21 and 14-year-old Stamford Strider Jenson Lewis was third in 11.18.

Fourth to finish and ‘first lady’ was Erin Cox, 13, from Stamford Striders with a time of 11.49, also a new female record. She shaved 25seconds off the previous best time.

Race director Tony Anders said: "We had 590 entrants to the 3k and 10k races combined, making this our biggest 'Run in the Woods' to date which raised more than £7,500 for the work we do in the community.

"Being able to raise this substantial amount was made possible by our main sponsor, Polyco Healthline. We're also very grateful to the 1st Bourne Scouts and Lincs 4x4 Response who did the marshalling."

The Rotary Club of Bourne were also grateful for the sponsorship by the NFU, Rutland Sports, Larkfleet, Frontier Agriculture, The White Horse at Baston, Taylor Wimpey, Longstaff and Sophie Allport

Photos and results from the 10k are on pages 136-7 of this Friday's Rutland and Stamford Mercury.
