Broken lift at Meadow Close, Bourne is fixed after Mercury contacts South Kesteven District Council

A broken lift that left people stuck in their homes for two months has been fixed.

Residents of Meadow Close sheltered housing in Bourne were told the lift that broke on December 5 could take weeks longer to repair.

South Kesteven District Council, which owns and maintains the Meadow Close flats had said fixing the lift was dependent on a part being available.

The day after an article highlighted the issue, an engineer turned up and the lift was back in action.

Jean Eldridge, an 88-year-old former nurse, and fellow first-floor resident Elaine Bover, 68, tested the lift, with other residents making sure they appeared safely on the ground floor.

Jayne Knight, Jean's daughter, said: "We believe it was down to the news coverage that the engineer was sent out. They said a battery needed changing."

A South Kesteven District Council spokesperson reiterated the delay was "due to parts being unavailable".
