Royal Marine Toby Gelsthorpe from Bourne is riding a scooter from Liverpool to Hull dressed as a Smurf
A royal marine is swapping camouflage for something more colourful as he tackles a scooter ride dressed as a Smurf.
Toby Gelsthorpe, of Gladstone Street, Bourne, plans to travel 135 miles from Liverpool to Hull on a push scooter.
The 26-year-old is raising money for Cancer Research UK having been inspired by family members who are fighting cancer or have lost their battle.
He said: "I came up with the idea while I was working in America. I thought the more stupid I look, the better and the more attention I will get for the charity."
Toby hasn't done any specific training for the stunt so hopes his military background will see him through.
He said: "Most of the lads I work with are based up north so that will help me get refuelled along the way.
"Apart from stopping for quick snacks, I plan to just keep going until it's done.
"I won't sleep until I complete it."
Toby grew up in Bourne and attended Robert Manning School. He worked as a plasterer for three years before joining the Royal Marines at the age of 19.
He is now based at Arbroath in Scotland.
Toby will set off from Liverpool tomorrow and expects the challenge to take up to 36 hours to complete. He will mostly travel alone but might be joined by friend for some sections of the route.
