Ketton enjoys annual community juice pressing
Apple growers took part in the annual community apple juice pressing in Ketton on Sunday.
They took their bags of fruit to the Ketton Brewery House at 10 High Street, along with containers and pressed away.
The event from 10am to 4pm was run by the Stamford Community Orchard group, which recently staged an Apple Day event in Stamford Arts Centre, the previous weekend.
Adam Cade, chairman of the orchard group said: “We have run this every year and more and more people come each year. There’s more interest in fresh fruit and growing your own nowadays.
“It is also a very sociable occasion. You put a bit of physical effort into getting fresh juice which certainly doesn’t taste like bought fruit juice.
“Instead, this juice is delicious. It tastes like crunching into a beautiful local apple.”
However, due to the poor weather, just a dozen people attended, well below the usual turnout, but still a good time was had by all.
Adam continued: “We made 25 gallons of juice that day. About half will be turned into cider. That foments with the wild yeast that is found on the skin of the apple. They say when the cuckoo starts to sing, you can start drinking the cider.”
The Stamford Community Orchard Group is a non-profit group based in Stamford and aims to rediscover the town’s lost apples.
It operates a community orchard in Christchurch Close and has regular meetings. It’s next main event is a Wassail at the orchard in the New Year.
