Rutland Cycling, with stores in Whitwell and Edith Weston, named Large Business of the Year at the Mercury Business Awards
Team work and perseverance has led to the expansion of what started as a small, family-run business.
Rutland Cycling, which has stores in Whitwell and Edith Weston, impressed the judges at the Mercury Business Awards bagging it a top spot in the Large Business of the Year category.
Karen Archer, chief executive, said: “It’s interesting for Rutland’s history as we started in 1981 with a shop on the shore of Rutland Water.
“Now we’ve got 14 stores with 270 people across our teams. It’s a big change.
“For any organisation to be recognised as a large business is fantastic, it means we are doing the right things for people.”
The management team at Rutland Cycling has continued with expansion plans and recruited more staff throughout the pandemic.
As well as selling a range of bikes and bike equipment, the firm also offers cycle hire.
Karen said: “We have an engaged work force and are very proud of our teams.
“We invest time and are part of a big family.
“We want everybody to be involved so take thoughts and views into consideration.”
Rutland Cycling also earned the title of Best Independent Retailer at the awards.
Karen said: “To win one award is great but to win two is quite a shock and nice surprise.
“I am absolutely delighted to share it with the team.”
Rich Olsen, the owner and managing director of Ketton marketing firm Olsen Metrix and chairman of Stamford Chamber of Commerce, judged the Large Business category.
He said: “It was a tough decision between two well established businesses.
“But it was the growth record and aspirations of Rutland Cycling that won through together with their culture and how despite these unusual times they have shown tremendous resilience and the ability to pivot.”
Congratulations go to Bourne-based house building company, Larkfleet Group, which was awarded highly commended.
