Rutland Water to welcome Ospreys imminently

One of Rutland Water’s most popular attractions will return to the nature reserve imminently.

Ospreys spend the winter months in Africa, but they will soon be touching down in the county.

Thousands of people from around the world tune into Rutland Water’s Osprey nest cam to catch a glimpse of the formerly endangered bird of prey breeding and hunting.

Osprey information officer at Rutland Water, Abi Mustard, said the staff are excited to see them return.

“This is a really exciting time of the year for us,"she said.

“The Ospreys will be arriving from Africa any day now.

“Ospreys are fantastic birds because of how unique they are. For them to be based in Rutland for six months of the year is amazing.”

The population of ospreys in Rutland has risen steadily since the birds were reintroduced to the area in the 1990s.

They have now been breeding in the area for 19 years with more than 150 young ospreys fledging from nests in Rutland Water.
