Casterton College hosts charity cake sale with the support of The Purple Pumpkin Cake Company to raise money for the York Rescue Boat in memory of Ketton teenager Sonny Ferry

A school commemorated the life of a former pupil with a bumper cake sale.

Casterton College hosted the sale in memory of Sonny Ferry, of Ketton, who drowned during a night out in York last month.

The 19-year-old's family have launched an appeal for new lifesaving equipment and Friday's sale raised £1,100 towards the target.

Head of English Claire Rawes said: "Although we are teachers we are also parents and to hear what happened to Sonny was horrific.

"The Ferry family were here for many years and we know them well, so although you feel powerless we wanted to do something to help."

Sarah Cooper-Smith, of The Purple Pumpkin Cake Company, auctioned a lifeboat cake. It was won by vice principal Neil Rawes. He donated it to the lifeboat team and Sarah delivered it this week during a planned holiday.

She said: "They are overwhelmed by what the people of Stamford are doing."
