St Gilbert's Primary School in Stamford is rated as good by Ofsted

A school is celebrating a successful start to the academic year having received a positive report from Ofsted.

St Gilbert’s Primary School in Stamford retained its status as a “good” school following a visit from inspectors in July.

The report says pupils receive a good education, behave well and build good relationships with staff.

Ofsted inspector Stephanie Innes-Taylor said: “Pupils are well cared for in this friendly, welcoming school. Staff share a vision to inspire pupils with a love of learning.

“An engaging curriculum and pastoral care are at the heart of the school’s work.”

The school was praised for its love of reading, with reception pupils starting to read within weeks and classes named after popular authors.

Children are also encouraged to take on responsibilities such as youth governors, house captains and eco ambassadors.

To improve further, staff are advised to check more often how well children remember what has been taught.

The report said: “Teachers do not check regularly what pupils know and remember in subjects other than mathematics. This means teachers cannot always be sure that learning consistently matches pupils’ needs.

“Subject leaders should plan when and how teachers should check if pupils know more, remember more, and can do more across the school’s curriculum.”

Headteacher Frances Dicker welcomed the report.

She said: “We have so much to celebrate and are thrilled that the report accurately captures the ethos of St Gilbert’s and the dedication of staff to ensure pupils receive a good quality education where learning is purposeful and engaging.

“The recognition of our effective pastoral care, pupils’ good behaviour, the wealth of wider opportunities provided for all pupils and the high expectations they experience in daily school life is an excellent reflection of St. Gilbert’s.”
