Whissendine school unveils new all weather track to get children active
A Rutland-based primary school has invested in a daily mile track in an effort to encourage pupils to get more active.
Whissendine Church of England Primary School officially opened the new track last week Thursday at an event attended by England junior athlete Ben Higgins.
The school's PE co-ordinator Emma Young said the track had been well received by pupils.
"It's an all weather track so it can be used in all sorts of conditions," she said.
"If you go around it nine times it's a mile."
Emma said the track was open to use before school, during breaks and after school.
"Many schools have invested in these tracks as it encourages the children to get active," she said.
"The school has pedometers and also assists with timing the children so they can try and beat their personal best.
"The feedback has been great and they absolutely love it and have been out there all the time on it."
Emma said it took about 10 to 15 minutes to complete a mile while jogging and about 15 to 20 minutes walking.
"The support we have had from parents for the track has been great," she said.
"It has been a real hit with everyone, even the teachers."
