St Gilbert's School in Stamford team up with the Elong'o School in Kenya near Osupukiai

Stamford pupils will learn more about different cultures as they team up with a Kenyan School.

George Hetherington from Stamford has spent the past two years fundraising for the Osupukiai community, bringing in more than £45,000 to provide a well with fresh drinking water.

Keen to continue improving the village, George has been raising funds for the Elong'o School, which many of the children attend. He has also set up a link between them and St Gilbert's School in Stamford.

He said: “It’s exciting as it’s giving the opportunity for children to learn about different cultures and people.

“It’s children from two very different worlds meeting together and learning from each other.

“Both schools are excited by it and are looking forward to it.

“We’ve just got to make it physically possible for them to do it.”

Work is currently being done to provide appropriate technology to the Elong'o School to enable them to video call with the Stamford children.

The twinning project is part of St Gilbert's mission to ensure pupils have greater exposure to different cultures.

Miss Pozella, culture and diversity lead at St Gilbert's School, said: "As part of this project, pupils and staff will be communicating with pupils and staff at Elong’o School, exploring comparisons of everyday life, our curriculum, learning environments and traditions at different times of the year including Christmas.

"To enhance the school link, pupils are looking forward to taking and sending pictures and videos, completing artwork and writing letters as pen pals ahead of meeting virtually.

"This is only the start of what St. Gilbert’s hopes to be a long term partnership which is also supported by the charity Power for People."
