Schools, roads and employment information published for St George’s Barracks development in Rutland
New information regarding roads, schools and employment has been published on the proposed redevelopment of St George's Barracks in Rutland with more than 2,000 homes.
Documents outline the need for a primary school on the site - although a secondary school is not deemed necessary - and consider transport and employment needs.
The information from the Defence Infrastructure Organisation has been compiled in support of its application to include St George’s Barracks in Rutland County Council’s Draft Local Plan.
The documents are available to view on the St George’s website.
Key points
- Brooke Hill Academy is 'willing to start the process' required to expand by transferring to another site
- The documents note that Edith Weston primary would relocate, leaving its site of nearly two acres
- Projected pupil numbers outlined in the documents lead to the conclusion that a new secondary school would not be needed to serve the development
- Rutland secondary schools Catmose College, Uppingham Community College and Casterton College are noted as having enough places - although 'good transport from the St George’s site would be imperative to support parental choice'
- The employment document forecasts 2,161 jobs being created on the site based on 2,245 homes being built (although this figure is used in the employment document, it is understood to have been revised to 2,215)
- The majority of these jobs would be in offices, industrial, warehousing and distribution (843) while shops, high street, financial services, restaurants, cafés, pubs etc. are predicted to create 377 jobs
Catherine Davies, head of estates at the Defence Infrastructure Organisation, said: “We have undertaken a lot of work to assess the viability of the St George’s site and demonstrate that to Rutland County Council as part of their Local Plan process.
“We have published these documents so that residents and stakeholders have the opportunity to review and understand the evidence base that sits behind the site being put forward for redevelopment.”
Rutland County Council is now reviewing the documents in advance of making a decision on whether the site is viable to be included in the Draft Local Plan. A decision is expected to be made later this year.
Following its successful bid for Garden Communities funding, the project is also awaiting the outcome of its bid for £30million to the national Housing Infrastructure Fund.
The funding would play a significant role in allowing the MOD to deliver infrastructure around St George’s Barracks in a way that minimises impact on surrounding communities.
