Stamford scout group launches a £1m appeal to build a new headquarters and community hub
A scout group has launched a £1m appeal to build a new meeting place.
The 2nd Stamford Town Scout Group currently owns two huts - one in Drift Road and one in Empingham Road - but neither is fit for purpose.
They plan to sell off the Drift Road site and put the money towards building a new headquarters and community hub at the bigger site in Empingham Road.
Scout leader Jan Simmonds said the project will create a “legacy building” with enhanced facilities for scout groups and the wider community.
The proposed building features two main halls, a meeting room, office and kitchen facilities.
Outdoor toilets and showers would be included along with an indoor climbing wall.
A covered outdoor area would also be created to support the scouting ethos of “bringing the outside in”.
Scout leader Neil Wotherspoon said: “The size and flexibility of the halls offer more scope to vary the scouting programme.
“The environmental aspects of the build will offer practical learning opportunities and overall it’s a much bigger space, easier to use and will certainly be warmer.”
The building would be used by the existing scout groups but also opened up to the public.
MindSpace Stamford has already expressed an interest in using the building.
Jan said: “It’s very important to us to make the facilities available to the wider community.”
The scout group, which has 130 young members, launched its fundraising appeal following a presentation to Stamford Town Council on Tuesday where members were keen to support the project.
Coun Amanda Wheeler (LibDem) said: “I’d be delighted to help in anyway. The work you do is fantastic.”
The sale of the Drift Road site is expected to make £300,000. Grant applications could attract up to £460,000 and the group has already raised £40,000.
They hope the £200,000 shortfall will come from smaller donations and fundraising events.
Ten-year-old Adam Warren has organised the first event this weekend. His virtual fun run has already raised more than £1,000 in sponsorship.
Trustees will apply for planning permission by Easter and if the application is successful, the project could be completed in 18 months.
