The Deepings School hosts Cardiac Risk in the Young heart screening

Pupils, parents and teachers have had their hearts screened for undiagnosed health problems thanks to a charity.

On Saturday and Sunday Cardiac Risk for the Young held 214 medical screenings for people aged 14 or over at The Deepings School.

The event was in memory of former pupil Lucy Jessop who died aged 18 from a heart attack.There were no warning signs that Lucy would be one of 12 people aged 14 to 35 who dies in the UK every week from undiagnosed cardiac conditions.

Richard Lord, headteacher of The Deepings School, said: “Lucy was a well-respected and much-loved sixth form student at our school.

“Lucy’s tragic death in 2015, due to an undiagnosed cardiac condition, affected the students and staff of the school greatly.

“We were honoured to respect Lucy’s memory by holding a second screening event and will continue to assist her family and friends with fundraising activities and practical support that benefits cardiac screening for young people.”

Lisa Goodchild, school business manager, said: “We were very happy to act as a venue for the charity.

She added: “I think the families felt very grateful they had the opportunity to undergo the screening and I hope we have the opportunity to do it again.”

The screening - which costs £10,000 - was funded by Lucy’s friends and family who raised money for the charity.

Lucy’s mother, Tracy Jessop-Thompson, attended the screening and has since received 'all positive feedback’.

Tracy said: “We are fundraising to stop other people going through what we did.”
