Rutland County Council cancels 2nd meeting in a week because not enough members turned up

A second Rutland County Council meeting in less than a week has been cancelled because not enough members turned up.

The meeting yesterday (January 31) of the Rutland SACRE – the Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education – had to be cancelled because some notices to attend were not sent or did not reach members, and because there was not sufficient representation from each of the religious groups – which is required for this type of meeting – council officers decided the meeting was not legally quorate, and cancelled it.

A Countryside Access Forum was cancelled on Wednesday (January 25) because not enough people were there and an appeal was issued for more people to join the forum.

Among the items on the agenda that were to have been decided upon was the locally agreed syllabus for religious education 2023/24.

This syllabus has been written for teaching RE in schools by members of the Locally Agreed Syllabus committee from Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Rutland SACREs. The aim is to ensure that children receive a balanced, open-minded and comprehensive education in religious education.

As the next scheduled meeting of the Rutland SACRE is not due until March 14, this syllabus will now have to be put before the cabinet of Rutland County Council on March 7 without it having being properly discussed or scrutinised in public.

A Rutland County Council officer said: “Rather than hold everybody up, I can try and contact the chair and see if I can arrange another Zoom meeting to get us all together sooner rather than later, because this item needs approving.”

The meeting was closed, and any new date before the cabinet meeting has not yet been published.
