Jessie Bellamy in North Street, Bourne to close after 83 years
A town clothing store is closing down after 83 years of trading.
Jessie Bellamy, at 25 North Street in Bourne, will be shutting due to owner Richard Simpson’s retirement and a dwindling number of customers.
Richard began working in his parent’s shop 68 years ago and took it over as manager nine years later.
The business originally began in a small unit in North Street - where the card company Clintons is currently located.
About seven years later the shop relocated across the road to a more spacious unit and the family moved into the flat above.
Richard, 77, said: “There used to be a thriving population of people living above the shops as it was just after the war.”
When the family first bought the shop it was split into smaller rooms, one of which was sublet to a business selling flowers and groceries.
Despite many changes to the layout of the store, Richard and his wife, Judith, wanted to keep to a traditional approach because they believe clothes should be touched and seen rather than bought online.
Richard said: “I’ve always been reluctant to get involved with computers and IT. I thought it would never last, but has - it has taken over.”
The store, which is named after Richard’s mother, sells a variety of women’s clothes, lingerie and accessories. Over the years it has also sold drapery, school uniforms and menswear.
When he was young, Richard and his mother would travel to London to buy clothes for the store. “She chose things she knew her customers would like.”
Richard, whose daughter, Caroline Creasey is also a business partner, said: “I was hoping to continue with the ladies’ clothing but trade in Bourne has deteriorated tremendously.”
Since it was announced the shop was closing, people have shared their sadness online and have spoken with employees at Jessie Bellamy.
Richard said: “It’s been a wonderful journey and experience to serve Bourne. Our loyal customers, both local and those who have come from far away, have been most appreciated by our family and staff.”
A final day of trading has not been decided, but a clearance sale began on Wednesday.
