Environmental campaigner Maggie Bentley is encouraging Stamford shops to join the Close the door campaign
An environmental campaigner is encouraging shops to close their doors.
Maggie Bentley, 66 and member of the environmental campaign group, Fridays for the Future, is persuading shops in Stamford to save energy by keeping their doors shut.
She said: “It’s a simple action that saves energy, saves money, protects health and creates a better environment for staff and customers.
“I usually try to shut them on the way in or out and I’ve noticed other people doing it.
“When you feel that heat coming out and you think of the people in world with flooding and everything, it’s just a small thing you can do and it adds up.
“There’s still more that can be done and that’s why I get so cross.”
Maggie added Card Factory, Fat Face, Mint Velvet and SpaceNK in Stamford were good at keeping their doors closed.
Mobility scooter user, Dorothy Chambers, 71 from Stamford, said: “I agree with the idea behind it but it does create problems if you can’t just walk in and push the door.
“It’s something that can discourage you from going into town which is such a shame and a great pity for Stamford which has lots of small, independent shops which I want to support.
“If shops had a bell outside like they do at HSBC and some garages, then that would be helpful.”
Fridays for Future will be marking Valentine’s Day tomorrow (Friday February 14) with other environmental groups at Oxfam in High Street.
The charity shop has allowed the group to put green hearts in their window to ‘show some love’.
Over 50 people attend a 'Heading for Extinction' talk.
