Bourne fundraisers call on the public to make skate park dream a reality
Skate park campaigners have almost reached the halfway point of their fundraising but will be relying on public and business donations to raise the rest.
Bourne Dimension Skate Park needs £300,000 to build a skate park on land at the Abbey Lawn.
The land will be leased from Bourne United Charities.
Sports England has pledged money along with £25,000 from Bourne and District Round Table, £25,000 from the Pocket Park Plus Scheme of the Ministry of Housing, £10,000 from the South Kesteven District Council community fund and £4,000 from Warners Midlands Plc.
Trustee Nelly Jacobs said: "We are making significant progress with our fundraising efforts which have gained momentum in the last few months.
"We've got money from the bigger companies so from now on we'll be looking at smaller grants and support from the town."
The trustees are looking for financial support and help from businesses which can provided free or discounted materials.
Fundraising events are also taking place to boost the funds.
Mrs Jacobs added: "There's a huge number of people supporting us. Lots of people think there is a real gap in things for young people in Bourne.
"Other towns have BMX tracks and equipment for older children, but we don't have that here."
To help raise money some of the trustees will help to man the inflatable slide at Bourne Festival next weekend, keeping half of the takings for the project.
They will also run their own fundraising stall.
A quiz night, fish and chips night is taking place at Elsea Park Community Centre on Saturday, June 15 at 7pm.
Tickets cost £10 each from enquiries@dimensionskatepark.org.uk or call 01778 423334.
Anyone who wants to get involved in the skate park project is invited to attend the committee's next meeting.
It takes place on Monday, June 3 at Smiths in Bourne at 6pm.
Mrs Jacobs said: "Help us make the skate park for Bourne a reality."
The public can also support the project via LotterySK. Tickets cost £1 per week and half of the proceeds go to the project.
