Snakes are kept away but not the guests!

Scorching temperatures kept two sets of regular visitors away from a popular annual fun day.

But the enforced absence of creatures due to feature in a display of exotic pets, and pooches lined up for a dog show did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of a large crowd at the Edenham Extravaganza.

Up to to 500 people turned up for the fourth community fun day in the village organised by the Steam Action charity and held Saturday, June 30.

Charity chairman Nikki Gunn said numbers may have been slightly down on last year, but the event was a big success, and it was anticipated a tidy sum had been raised for the charity, which helps keep a community spirit alive in the village.

Although the dog show and display of snakes, lizards and the like had to be called off for animal welfare considerations, there was still plenty to enjoy and admire.

Performances by Bourne Borderers Morris team and Corby Glen line dancers drew loud applause, as did the efforts of teams in a tug of war competition.

Other highlights included a flypast by a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire and a ‘Fiat 500 Challenge’ when 12 plucky individuals managed to squeeze into a small car.

Welcome refreshments in the glorious sunshine was to be found in the bar, and cakes and sandwiches made by locals were eagerly snapped up by the crowds.

The event was well supported by villagers, and there was also a good turnout by people from further afield.

Steam Action was established about 40 years ago and funds a Christmas dinner and other treats for older people in the village.

Nikki said: “The charity’s aim is to foster cmmunity spirit and the fun day plays a big part towards that.”
