South Kesteven householders asked to dispose of asbestos correctly after fly-tipping poses danger to health

The district council is urging householders to dispose of asbestos correctly.

South Kesteven District Council is reminding residents and businesses to dispose of potentially harmful asbestos responsibly.

Small amounts of asbestos are being found among fly-tipping in the district that potentially poses dangers to anyone who comes into contact with it.

The council continues to clamp down on those who flout the rules and dump rubbish and is appealing to residents who report it to be careful if they discover building materials among any discarded items.

The council has thanked residents who identify firms or individuals who do not produce correct documentation when requested as this allows the authority to investigate potential unlicensed traders.

However, it is also appealing to those who may dismantle structures, such as sheds at home, to always check carefully if they contain asbestos and if so, to arrange safe disposal.

SKDC’s Executive Manager for Environment Ian Yates said: “Residents and businesses are usually exceptionally careful and aware of the dangers of asbestos. Residents should always ensure using a licensed firm when arranging disposal of rubbish and asbestos at home and check the HSE website for licensed companies as part of their duty of care.”
