Spectacular first performance of new military choir

Kendrew Barracks was lit up with the sound of harmonies on Friday after a spectacular first performance from the Military Wives Choir.

Cottesmore Military Wives Choir performed for the first time in a large auditorium filled with family, friends and dignitaries of Kendrew Barracks.

The group which has only been rehearsing together since September, performed an array of musical favourites for over 300 guests and dignitaries. Songs included Walking on Sunshine, Total Eclipse of the Heart, Don’t Stop Believin’ and Gareth Malone’s Stronger Together - a favourite for the military wives.

Army wife, Jo Addison, who recently moved to Kendrew Barracks after her sergeant husband Tim was transferred from Colchester Barracks, had the initial idea to form the choir back in September for wives and partners at the base.

Wives, mothers, partners and daughters of servicemen from Kendrew Barracks, St George’s Barracks in North Luffenham, RAF Wittering and veterans from Oakham, as well as female service personnel joined the newly set up choir, forming a group of over 50 women.

Under the guidance of musical director Sarah Doyle and with pianist Diana De-Wett the group succeeded in making a statement at their first big performance.

Choir member, Chirstine Matthews (soprano 1) said: “Everyone was really nervous to begin with, but once we started singing we all relaxed. It was an amazing experience and it was so good to see everyone in the audience clapping away.

“This is my first ever post and I moved all the way from Manchester to be here, so the choir has been a great way to make friends.”

Following the concert the group held a charity raffle with all proceeds going towards the choir.

Julia Leong, communications officer for the choir, said: “Army, RAF and Navy are all represented within our choir.

“It’s all about women standing together and supporting each other, being ‘stronger together’. It helps us make friends and keep our minds occupied during difficult times.”

Although this concert was guest list only, the group hopes to perform for the general public at a number of events this year.
