In 1988 an astonishing 19.6million viewers tuned in to watch the iconic wedding of Scott and Charlene in Neighbours.

Actor Jason Donovan then swapped the streets of Erinsborough for the West End and took the lead in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat at the London Palladium.

Fast-forward to now and the 52-year-old is bringing his Midlife Crisis Tour to Stamford Corn Exchange Theatre to share his rise and fall from stardom.

Jason spoke to the Mercury to share what’s in store for this trip down memory lane.

He said: “It’s an intimate experience of me and my life, underscored by music.

“We’ve tried to hone in on what people want.”

Describing the show as “paid for therapy” Jason talks about his rise to fame and gives a brutally honest account of when his career came crashing down through drug addiction.

He said: “I disappeared into a dark hole in the 90s. I thought I had peaked at 22 and wondered what would I do then?”

The turning point was meeting his wife and starting a family. Jason’s career got back on track with appearances on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and Strictly Come Dancing.

He said: “You never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”

This summer Jason will play the role of the Pharaoh in Joseph after being approached by Andrew Lloyd Webber directly to join the cast.

He said: “I could never eclipse the moment in the 90s when the show was so iconic.

“It’s the right decision to go back but it’s also right I play a different role.”

After that he will turn his hand to producing a touring production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Jason will appear in Stamford on Thursday, May 2. Tickets are available from 01780 766455.
