Stamford mayor rejects claim she was 'stifling debate' at meetings

Stamford mayor Breda Griffin was accused of ‘stifling debate’ at a meeting of Stamford Town Council this week.

The agenda for Tuesday night’s meeting had highlights like “max 10 minutes” by each item.

Coun Bill Turner said: “It’s a stifling of debate and against standing orders.”

Having ten minute limits, he believed, would only allow one councillor to speak on an issue.

Mayor Griffin replied: “Actually, it’s just a guideline. If more people want to speak, it’s perfectly fine. I’m not stifling anybody speaking.”

Coun Bob Sandall said town council policy is presently to have a two hour limit for meetings, but if necessary, councillors can then vote to extend that.
