Shop Stamford gather in Ironmonger Street to promote importance of ‘shopping locally’ this Christmas

Stamford businesses joined forces this week to promote the importance of ‘shopping locally’ this festive season.

Dozens of traders gathered, socially distanced, in Ironmonger Street on Tuesday (December 8) holding Shop Stamford signs in a bid to encourage Christmas shoppers to support the town’s economy.

Each year the group launches a campaign to illustrate to people the importance of using independent traders in the town.

Following nine turbulent months for businesses during the coronavirus pandemic and two national lockdowns, they believe their message is now more vital than ever.

Sarah Sewell, owner of Energy Clothing and Shop Stamford co-ordinator, has a clear message for customers.

“Support businesses in the town and look out for us,” she said.

“Places have been struggling as we have been shut for months and we are never going to get that back.

“We need support now, and into the new year.”

She added that for some businesses, if people in the town do not make purchases from them, they could risk closing permanently.

Matt Wheatley, of JHH Media who is producing a campaign video for the group, believes that the business community spirit is part of Stamford’s charm.

He said: “It’s quite unique to have this community spirit - it seems to keep growing.

“All people say on social media is, how can we get involved? How can we support or help?

“Businesses really value the platform.”

The independent shops involved in the Shop Local campaign have been joined by some of the cafés, restaurants and chains. Stamford Endowed Schools is also supporting the initiative with its ‘Stamford Card’, which provides benefits at businesses.

Shop Stamford face masks have been given to employees across the town to wear in solidarity.
