Stone supplier backs appeal to help build up Peterborough Cathedral
Peterborough Cathedral is being backed by a local business with a proven track record of helping to preserve historic buildings.
Stamford Stone, of Swaddywell Quarry, Stamford Road, Marholm, has become a gold corporate partner of the cathedral’s Peterborough 900 appeal.
It’s a stunning building which deserves to be seen by more people.
The appeal aims to provide significant financial backing for plans to improve the cathedral for its 900th anniversary in 2018.
Family firm, Stamford Stone, is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of limestone.
Director Laura Green, whose father George Wilson founded the company about 20 years ago, said: “The cathedral is a stunning building which deserves to be seen by more people.
“We want to do what we can to support this local treasure.”
Stamford Stone’s quarries at Clipsham and Greetham in south Lincolnshire have supplied stone for Windsor Castle, the Houses of Parliament, Ely and Salisbury cathedrals and Oxford University colleges.
Mr Wilson said: “As a successful local family business we recognise the importance of improving facilities for both current and future generations.
“Peterborough 900 campaign is the perfect example of combining pride in our local history with the need to adapt and develop for the future. We’re proud to be involved.”

“It’s particularly appropriate because much of Peterborough Cathedral was built from limestone quarried less than three miles away from their current operations.

Peterborough 900 campaign seeks to maintain and improve the cathedral so more people can enjoy it for years to come.
This includes improving the fabric of the building and the facilities available for use by visitors, local businesses, educational establishments and the arts.
Peterborough 900 began in 2011 and improvements include a new sound system, the launch of educational opportunities for local and national students and the introduction of a community music school.
