A-level results 2020-21: Uppingham School pupils achieve 52 per cent A* grades

Pupils at a Rutland School have been hailed for their 'resilience, fortitude, and dedication', with more than two-thirds gaining straight A* or A grades.

A total of 52 per cent of grades awarded at Uppingham School were A* or equivalent, with 85.1 per cent graded A* or A.

And 69 per cent of the independent school's pupils gained straight A* or A grades.

"We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of our 2021 leavers, who have had to endure so many challenges over the last 18 months," said Dr Richard Maloney, headteacher of Uppingham School.

"Their results are a product of their resilience, fortitude, and dedication, coupled with my colleagues' inspirational and brilliant work, teaching and supporting them."

With no exams held nationwide last school year owing to the pandemic, grades were awarded through teacher assessments and coursework.

The school confirmed the exam boards overseeing the process had made no changes to the grades awarded and that almost all of their pupils have been offered places at their chosen universities.

Challenges overcome at Uppingham School this year included a covid outbreak in June, when almost 600 pupils were forced to self-isolate.

"I am proud of every one of the upper sixth, not only for the grades they achieved, but for the strength of character they have shown and the way they have led the community," Dr Maloney added.

"They are a superb group of people and we look forward to seeing them transform the world for the better in the future."
