A health worker prepared for a 296-mile bike ride from London to Paris with a six-hour static cycle at a supermarket.

Su Mansell spent Sunday with husband Stephen and friend Joanne Ness in the lobby of Morrisons in Stamford.

The group will be among scores of cyclists cyling from the British to the French capital city in July.

Su, lead practitioner at the Greenwood Day Surgery at Stamford Hospital, is raising money for the children’s charity Action Medical Research. On Sunday shoppers donated £225, which brought her total fundraising so far to more than £900.

She said: “I still can’t believe that I have volunteered to do this, but it is for such a great cause I just couldn’t say no. The charity has had a significant impact on children’s medicine, and has helped fund research that has led to the rubella vaccine, meningitis vaccine and the Glasgow Coma Scale.”

Su is not a regular cyclist, but husband Stephen is. He has previously taken on several big challenges, including a ride from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

“I was fed up of being a cycling widow,” joked Su.

“I am nervous about the challenge because it’s a big distance for me. I’ve got a lot of training to do.

“It’s a huge challenge but it’s a fabulous challenge. And it’s for an amazing charity.”

Su and her team will begin their bike ride in London on Wednesday, July 22, cycling down to Dover before they begin their ride through Northern France the following day.

The team will pass through some of the towns heavily involved in the First and Second World Wars and visit some of the war graves, before cycling down the Champs Elysees to the Eiffel Tower where they will finish on Saturday, July 25, the day before the Tour De France passes through.

Su will take part in another static cycle at Morrisons tomorrow (Saturday) during store opening hours. Su managed 38 miles in her last session, which is the furthest she has ever ridden, so hopes to beat that distance tomorrow as her preparation intensifies.

She has also held fundraising events such as raffles to help her reach her £1,5000 total.
