Lyddington village fete attracts visitors looking for a slice of traditional Rutland

Tea and cakes and plenty of Pimm's went down a treat at traditional fete on a Rutland village green on Saturday.

People attending the event in Lyddington were treated to all the favourite stalls including a bottle tombola, bric-a-brac and a coconut shy, while entertainment included a flypast by a World War Two Spitfire, a fun dog show and a display of vintage cars and bikes.

Lyddington resident Alix Cunnell, who helped to spread the word about the event, said: "The tea tent was ever so popular and we are fortunate to have many very good bakers living in Lyddington who supplied plenty of cakes for people to enjoy - although there weren't many left by the end of the day!

"There was also a barbecue and Pimm's, and a plant stall which was very well supported by all the green-fingered people in the village."

Alix added that there were excellent prizes donated for the raffle, including a gin tasting, and the teddy tombola saw lots of children leaving the fete with arm-loads of soft toys.

Meanwhile, English Heritage opened Lyddington Bede House for free visits during the day, and the two village pubs - The Marquess of Exeter and the Old White Hart - looked to be doing a roaring trade.

After the stalls were packed away, villagers involved in the fete continued their tradition of having a 'shared supper' as their way of rounding off a good day.
