Community-minded Uppingham takeaway owner cooks for Dabirul Islam Choudhury OBE

An award-winning chef has spoken of his desire to help older people in the community, after cooking for a knight who is more than 100 years old.

Abdul Hannan, owner of Hannan’s Spicy Cuisine in Ayston Road, Uppingham, cooked for Dabirul Islam Choudhury OBE, who is known in the Bangladeshi community as Dabir Chacha.

Abdul cooked popular dishes that included fried fish, kacchi biryani, lentil with satkora, sticky rice, and coconut and palm molasses.

Explaining that it is important in Bangladeshi culture to look after older people, whether they are well-known like Dabir Chacha, or those who have no family, Abdul said: “I like to help people.

“Some older people will be struggling to afford to heat their homes and buy proper food this winter and because my customers support my business so well, I am keen to give something back.”

Having made a community lunch for 100 people in Leicester recently, Abdul says he is looking to hold similar events to bring people together in Rutland.
