The World's Biggest Coffee Morning in Stamford and Rutland raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support




Across the country cups have been clinked and cake eaten as part of Macmillan Cancer Support’s biggest fundraising event.

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning last week saw people across the region donate money to the charity.

Dozens of coffee mornings were held in this area, taking place on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Some included book stalls, singers, games and musicians, as well as a choice of hot drinks and cakes.

A coffee morning organised by Snowdrop Homecare and Voluntary Action Rutland (VAR) raised £125.

Richard Auciello, centre manager at VAR, said the day was a great success.

People from all walks of life came to enjoy home-made cake, biscuits, sausage rolls and had a go on the tombola.

VAR also hold a weekly event called ‘Friends on Friday’ that invites people who may be lonely to socialise with others over a cup of tea.

Morcott Village Hall welcomed 80 people to its event, which raised £906.

Villagers baked cakes for the morning and those which weren’t eaten on the day were then sold to raise additional money.

There was a raffle with prizes donated by people from the community, and fun games such as ‘guess the weight of the cake’ and ‘guess the number of berries in the pie’.

Volunteer Marjorie Chown said: “Altogether it was amazing - a really successful day.”

Oakham CE school saw a combination of pupils, parents and teachers attend their coffee morning on Friday.

The event started early so that the children could attend before heading off to lessons at 9am.

Organised by the PTA chairman Suzanne Armer, it raised about £300.

Any leftover cakes were sold at the end of the school day, and any that didn’t sell were donated to Rutland Care Home for the residents to enjoy.

Headteacher of the school, Steve Cox, said: “The event had a good turnout; it was well supported.”

Stamford Pantomime Players held a ‘coffee evening’ during their Friday night rehearsal for their forthcoming production of Dick Whittington.

The cast dressed as pirates and sailors and £112.18 was raised for Macmillan.

Uppingham Community College raised an amazing £765 thanks to a combination of pupils, staff and people from the town coming to support the event.

Cake was served by the pupils and by the end of the morning was completely sold out.

Stylistics hair’s coffee morning included a trip around Stamford on a tank.

Their raffle is still being run and so the total amount of money raised has not yet been calculated.

The residents at Anchor Hanover donated cakes at their coffee morning and also had a bring and buy table.

Altogether they raised £350.00.
