Leeson Family Butchers in Oakham awarded for pork pies at Melton Mowbray Fatstock Show

A pork pie recipe which is 22 years in the making impressed judges at a fatstock show.

Steve Leeson and the team at Leeson Family Butchers in Oakham celebrated a win at the Melton Mowbray Fatstock Show on December 4, as they received first prize in the pork pie category.

"I was over the moon to have won," said Steve, who has previously received awards at the show.

Achieving the 'perfect' pork pie is a challenge, with the 56-year-old butcher having spent 22 years working to achieve just the right balance between the jelly, good meat and texture.

He also keeps the winning recipe a secret.

Steve, who has owned the butchers in Oakham High Street for 24 years, said: "They are always the same, we only have one person who makes them.

"We sell about 1,000 a week. They must be good because we sell so many."

He added: "I've just got them to know I wanted them. At the moment I wouldn't change anything about them."
