Quiz night at Danish Invader, in Stamford, raises hundreds for Helping our Ukrainian Friends aid convoy

Trivia knowledge helped raise vital funds for three organisations sending aid to war-torn Ukraine.

A quiz night at The Danish Invader in Stamford last week attracted 12 teams and raised more than £400.

The proceeds of the quiz and a raffle held on the night were donated to Helping Our Ukrainian Friends, a group of volunteers predominantly based in Stamford, Helpston and surrounding villages.

The winning team kindly auctioned their prize of five bottles of wine so organisers could raise even more money for the cause.

A team of drivers from Helping Our Ukrainian Friends are currently on their 12th mission to eastern Poland, delivering three vans full of essential aid to be distributed to frontline communities in Eastern Ukraine.

Four members carried on to Ukraine and on Tuesday arrived in Kyiv to deliver two ambulances as well as generators, chainsaws and lifesaving medical supplies for the frontlines.

Stamford man Jack Bon Holly, who is currently in Ukraine as part of a group of humanitarian aid volunteers, will deliver these much-needed items to grey and red zones at the frontline.

Two further large donations were made following the quiz and will be split between Stamford Stretchers for Ukraine and the Knit and Natter group which meet at the Unity Centre in Scotgate, Stamford on Sunday afternoons.

The latter group knits gloves, hats, socks, balaclavas and scarves for both civilians and military personnel currently enduring extreme cold temperatures.

Any donations of wool and volunteer knitters are always welcome.

One of the quiz organisers, Anne-Marie Hamill said: “It was a fantastic evening, and we were thrilled with the level of support shown by everyone who came.

“Winter is an especially harsh for those close to the frontlines and we are trying to do what we can to support them and to remind people here that Ukraine still needs our help.

“We would like to thank The Danish Invader for allowing us to use their function room, and the quiz night was such a success, attendees have asked us to hold another one in the new year.”
