Teen engineers record attempt for fastest toilet

A team of teenage engineers hope to be flushed with success if they manage to break the record for the world’s fastest toilet.

Four students from Harington School have been working on the design alongside studying for their A-levels.

The current record is held by Stamford inventor and YouTube star Colin Furze whose specially adapted mobility scooter reached a speed of 53.25mph with the help of a 140cc motorbike engine.

Oakham teenagers Thomas Ellis, Robbie English, Will Beaty and Joe Summers have now built a go-kart which they hope will be capable of smashing the record. It features a 250cc engine.

In its early tests the go-kart has reached 52.87mph but the team hopes with a few more tweaks and tests over the summer it will eventually reach 70mph.

Colin Furze secured the current record in May 2013.

The previous fastest toilet was the Bog Standard, which could travel at 42.25mph and was presented on the set of Lo Show Dei Record in Milan, Italy in March 2011.

The Oakham team will travel to Elvington Airfield on September 15 for their record-breaking attempt.

Securing the record would be the perfect end to the boys’ time at Harington School where they have just completed their A-levels.

A school spokesman said: “This real life engineering project was a fantastic extension to their academic work.”

All of the team members hope to pursue careers in engineering.

In September Thomas Ellis will begin a Ministry of Defence apprenticeship in weapons, ordnance, mutations and explosives; Will Beaty plans to study engineering at Warwick University; Joe Summers hopes to go to Leeds University to study mechanical engineering; and Robbie English plans to study engineering at Cambridge University.
