Uppingham Community College pupils launch common room project

Teenagers have launched an appeal to revamp their school common room.

The social space at Uppingham Community College is in need of an overhaul but tight school budgets won't stretch far enough to cover the cost.

The pupils have now taken on the task of raising the money themselves.

Year 10's progress leader Abby Achard said: "Exams, as we all know from our own school days, are a very stressful time for students and we want to alleviate some of this by providing them with a dedicated common room space.

"It will provide an area where students can study as well as relax and take a break. "

The teenagers have organised some fundraising events but are keen to attract help from the wider community.

Donations of cash will be welcomed but they are also looking for soft furnishings, paint, curtains, blinds and other finishing touches.

Miss Achard said: "Anything that would help create a welcoming and relaxed social space would be gratefully received.

"As a school we are trying to promote the healthy balance between work and study as we feel that this is very important for protecting mental health and well-being.

"I am pleased to support this student-led initiative and I hope that we can raise the necessary funds to make this happen."

The appeal is being coordinated by the current year 10 pupils who will take their GCSE exams next summer.

They hope to raise enough money to complete the work before they return to school in September.
