Thurlby Primary School welcomes interim headteacher
Pupils and staff of Thurlby Primary School have welcomed an interim headteacher to the school following the retirement of Graham Clegg last year.
Katherine Finch, the former deputy headteacher at Bourne Westfield Primary Academy, took up the position of interim headteacher this month and could occupy it until a permanent headteacher is appointed later in the year.
Mr Clegg retired from Thurlby Primary School in December after having also worked at two other schools in Lincolnshire.
He trained at the Kesteven College of Education before starting his career at Deeping St James Primary School where he worked from 1978 until 1992 before taking up the position of deputy headteacher at St Gilbert’s Primary School in Stamford.
He became headteacher at Thurlby on April 24, 1995 and held the position until his retirement last month.
“I have mixed feelings about retirement. It’s an extremely rewarding job and it’s a privilege to see so many children grow in confidence and enjoy their learning,” he said. “I’m looking forward to retirement but will miss the job.”
Mr Clegg was inspired to become a teacher while working in the reprographics department of a secondary school.
“It was my experiences there that made me decide that’s what I wanted to do. There have been so many changes in education since then. The workload for teachers has increased massively, the inspection process and there have been changes in the curriculum.”
A farewell assembly was held for Mr Clegg in December where each class presented him with a card and he received a gift from parents, staff
and governors.
Meanwhile, the school will soon benefit from having more learning technology and outdoor play equipment thanks to LotterySK.
Thurlby PTFA is set to benefit from £1,300 of South Kesteven District Council lottery funding for fun educational resources for pupils. SKDC’s deputy leader Kelham Cooke said: “It’s very rewarding to see real evidence of that now working at the heart of the community and I hope that it encourages other schools’ parent teacher organisations to sign up and enjoy the
benefits.”
