A car-free day has been proposed for Stamford
Stamford could go 'vehicle free' for a day if a resident's idea gets the green light.
Sally Jordan put forward the vision of children playing in car-free streets to a meeting of Stamford Town Council on Tuesday.
Proposing the idea as something to help reduce pollution and improve the environment, she said she had attended a One World Week event and their car-free idea had 'stuck in her head'.
"I would like to put forward a car-free day - or afternoon - in Stamford," she said, adding that she felt the benefits would outweigh any negatives.
"The town would be quieter with no revving engines and the air would be without fumes."
She added that "It would be great to involve local school children".
"If we could close Broad Street, children could ride their bikes up and down there in complete safety."
Sally suggested rickshaws could be used, as well as bikes and walking, with some public transport - especially for people who live at 'the far end of town'.
Councillors heard that a car-free day could be tied in with an event, such as Stamford Georgian Festival which takes place biennially. The next festival would be in September 2021.
Speaking after the meeting, Coun Amanda Wheeler (Lib Dem - St Mary's) said: "I'm very keen on environmental issues in Stamford and a car-free day is something to be encouraged.
"We're now going to be having a climate action group and it will be good for us to investigate this proposal in detail and see if it is viable."
Coun Wheeler would like to hear from schools, businesses, charities and individuals who might be interested in getting involved in the new climate action group.
She is also keen to hear from those able to provide parking that could be used for a 'park and ride' in Stamford, to support the proposed car-free day.
