Deeping St James tractor driver fined after trailer smashed into lorry

A tractor driver failed to correctly attach a trailer, which became detached and smashed into a lorry, a court heard.

Deeping St James man Philip Allen, 73, who admitted the offence, was said to have been the driver of the John Deere tractor and he had coupled the trailer.

Marie Stace, prosecuting, told Boston Magistrates' Court on Wednesday last week (October 27) that the trailer had become detached and crashed into an HGV on the A1175 Spalding Road at West Deeping at 11.20am on May 11, injuring the driver.

In interview, Allen, of Spalding Road, told police he thought he had connected it properly but the trailer had become detached when he went through a pot hole.

Allen, who was not represented in court, said he had been using the same tractor and trailer to help out because of staff shortages for several days.

He also told the court that the trailer had 'jarred off' when he hit a pot hole, but admitted he may not have connected it properly.

Allen was fined £292 and ordered to pay a total of £119 in court costs and charges.
