Rutland County Council fines trader for fly-tipping near Whissendine

A Rutland trader was fined £200 after dumping garden waste on a roadside verge near Whissendine.

Rutland County Council was alerted to the problem by a member of the public who was able to provide photos and a witness statement to identify the person responsible.

Rob Harbour, the council's deputy director for places, has thanked the resident for getting in touch and urged others to be vigilant and report any problems.

He said: “We would like to take this opportunity to thank local residents who report incidents of fly-tipping and encourage them to continue doing so.

"In this instance, the photos and detailed witness statement we received were crucial and meant that we could take the case forward.

“We are committed to pursuing fly-tippers. This latest case sends a strong message to fly-tippers and is a positive result for residents and the council.”

The council confirmed it cannot identify the trader for legal reasons because they have paid the fine.

Following the incident, the council has issued advice on what people can do if they come across fly-tipped waste in the county.

Residents are advised not to handle the rubbish for safety reasons but to contact the council to deal with it.

There is also a national website and mobile phone application called Fix My Street where people can report problems with fly-tipping, graffiti, broken pavements and street lighting.

Complaints are passed to the relevant council which will respond on the site within 10 days to explain what action will be taken.
