Tributes have been paid to former Stamford mayor David Nalson who died last week.

David, 78, who served as a Stamford town councillor for 16 years between May 1999 and April 2015 and as the town’s mayor from 2004 to 2005, passed away on Tuesday, July 24.

During his time in public office, David was elected as a district councillor serving

for one year as chairman of South Kesteven District Council.

He served two four-year terms as a South Kesteven district councillor for Stamford St John’s from 2000 to 2004 and 2011 to 2015 and was chairman in 2013 to 2014.

Stamford Town Council councillor Mike Exton described David as a “hard working, quiet man who was very easy to get on with”.

“I first met David many years ago through the council,” he said.

“He was a hard working conscientious man and was my deputy mayor for a period so I got to know him well while working with him.

“He was a very knowledgeable man who wrote several books on military topics.”

Kendal Mills, of Tallington, said David was a “true gentleman” who cared deeply about the local

community.

“Extremely cultured and urbane, he was always excellent company,” said Kendal.

“Naturally reserved and incredibly self-effacing, he also had a lovely sense of humour and saw the good in everyone.

“I had the pleasure of joining David’s ‘tennis parties’ at his home on Tinwell Road for nearly 20 years (supported for many years by his late wife, Wendy - who also oversaw the refreshments).

“David always regarded himself as a bit of a novice, but he was actually quite an accomplished player - right up until the autumn of 2017 when he hosted what was, sadly, to be the last one.

“We will miss him.”

Stamford Town Council councillor Tony Story said he had known David since they were at school together.

“He was a good, reliable and sensible councillor and made a good mayor,” said Coun Story.

Philip Sagar, association chairman for the Grantham and Stamford Conservative Association said: “David was a great supporter of the Conservative Party and will be sadly missed.

“David served his community with pride and always had the best interests of Stamford in mind. “

A thanksgiving service will be held for David starting at 2pm on Friday, August 24 in All Saints’ Church, Stamford.
