Castle Bytham Festival set to be bigger and better than ever

A traditional family festival that drew its biggest crowds ever last year is hoping to be bigger and better than ever it as it becomes a two-day extravaganza.

Castle Bytham Midsummer Festival has been a highlight of the village calendar for years and last year, thanks to warm weather, it drew record crowds from miles around.

And this year, organisers are hoping to build on that by turning it into a two-day event. on the weekend of June 23 and 24. Previously the Sunday event has been preceded by a day of music from the organisers of the Bythams Music Festival on the Saturday and although music will stay play a large part in the whole event, Saturday will also have fun for all the family - including a 5k fun run through the village and the surrounding countryside, as well as more activities involving the whole village - whether that be garage sales or open gardens. There will also be a pimp your wheelbarrow competition.

Meanwhile, Sunday's event promises all the usual family fun - including the duck race and dog show, and an artisan and food market with about 70 stallholders lining the streets. Fire breathing jugglers and stilt walkers will wander the streets, a beer festival , as well as a Prosecco bar and a Pimms tent will keep thirst at bay and there will be a big range of food, catering for not just carnivores but vegetarians,

The whole weekend will have a theme of Country Capers.

Patrick Candler and Alan Harvey, are on the organising committee and they are hoping people will support the new format. Patrick said: "Last year we had about 188 villagers involved which is nearly 25 per cent of the village. In terms of community spirit, that is phenomenal and if they all get involved in the Saturday event, it will be amazing.

"It's our first year so it will be a case of see how it goes but we hope people support us as they did last year."

Music will still play a big part in Saturday with two stages - both under cover in case - The Meadows Stage and the Fishpond Stage for acoustic artists. Patrick promised the most eclectic line-up yet, from pop singers, to rock stars, folk and blues performers, and village primary school choirs on the Sunday.
