Uppingham war memorial cleaned up ahead of Armistice Day
A war memorial has been restored ahead of events to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War.
Uppingham resident Basil Frost applied for heritage funding to repair and clean the town’s memorial with the the support of Denis Kenyon of the War Memorials At Risk Project. Uppingham Town Council has also tidied up access to the monument ahead of Armistice Day.
Members of the Women’s Institute in Uppingham and Wing and parishioners from St Peter and St Paul’s Church have also been preparing for the commemorative events.
Since February they have been knitting poppies to create a weeping window display at the town hall. It will be unveiled by the High Sheriff of Rutland, Susan Jarron, on Friday, November 2 at 10am.
Project coordinator Sue Streeter said: “We are grateful for all the help and hard work that everyone has put in and would encourage anyone involved in the project to come along to the opening.”
