C17 plane flies over Stamford before landing at RAF Wittering ahead of night flying
A Boeing C-17 Globemaster plane has landed at RAF Wittering ahead of night flying this week.
The plane was spotted flying low in the skies over the area with readers in Stamford, Bainton, Duddington and Great Casterton all sending in photos.
And RAF Wittering posted this video of it coming in to land on the runway this evening.
RAF Wittering confirmed that the aircraft is from 99 Squadron, based at RAF Brize-Norton in Oxfordshire, while the airspace and airfield at RAF Wittering are maintained by Operations Wing for use as a training asset for the MoD.
Officer Commanding Operations Wing at RAF Wittering, Wing Commander Nick Maxey, said: "Because RAF Wittering has a spacious airfield with a long runway and wide taxiways, it is ideal for large aircraft to practice approaches, take-offs and landings during daylight and at night. RAF pilots and air traffic controllers have to maintain their currency, and the ability to land and take off under the cover of darkness is a real tactical advantage."
The base had put out a notification last week informing neighbours and nearby equestrian communities that the larger aircraft would be arriving
Here is a selection of some of the photos and videos we received.
It comes as it was announced that RAF Wittering had missed out on being named the new home of the Red Arrows.
