Letter of the week: Mallard Pass solar farm development will ruin open fields

This week's letter writer discusses the Mallard Pass solar farm plans

I took a walk this morning along the lane that runs from Uffington to Essendine. The open fields with views of the woods beyond, the fresh air, the tranquillity and the sound of the skylarks singing high above were a joy to take in.

Hard to imagine that, if the Mallard Pass development goes ahead, all this will be lost for years to come, if not forever, replaced by a bleak landscape of lifeless technology, humming, creaking and glaring in the sun for as far as the eye can see. And likely not a sniff of wildlife anywhere.

Will the minister come to see and experience this precious landscape, before condemning it to the clutches of the developers? Will the sterling efforts of our Rutland MP bear fruit and save these fields for the crops we so desperately need to be grown there? Or is it, as many imagine, already a done deal?

I fear for Rutland, already at the bottom of the queue for Government cash and having to set one of the highest rates of council tax in the land as a result. Does anyone down there care about this precious county?

Perversely, perhaps, we are urged by our Lord Lieutenant to delve into our pockets and be the first in the country to erect a statue to the late monarch, who, for all she undoubtedly did for the nation, barely ever set foot in her smallest county.
