Viking re-enactors, a Spitfire flypast and lots of stalls and rides attracted thousands of people to the third Bourne Lions Family Fun Day at the weekend.

The annual event, held on the town’s recreation ground on Sunday, also featured a five-a-side football tournament with Bourne Town Juniors FC players, and a dog show.

Graham Crane, treasurer of the Bourne and District Lions, which organises the fun day, said it is going from strength to strength.

He said: “We had a downpour at midday which did disperse the crowd temporarily but foruntately it didn’t last long and we made the best of it. Around 2,000 people attended in total.

“We had a flypast from a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire at at around 1.40pm. We had hoped a Hurricane would be flying over also but weather conditions meant that wasn’t possible.

“The fun day is in its third year and is getting bigger and better each year we hold it.

“It’s a big task for organiser Lynne Roberts and the rest of the Lions team, but it’s always worth the effort.”

It is not yet known how much money was raised, but proceeds will be used to help good causes.

Three performances by the Vikings Of Mercia re-enactment group were one of the highlights of the day.

As well as doing combat displays, they also encouraged visitors to take a look around their living history camp and discussed clothing, weapons and armour of the Viking age.

Graham added: “They were very authentic and scared the pants off people watching them perform in the arena.”
