Village is named best kept community in South Kesteven

Villagers were delighted when their home was crowned winner of the South Kesteven Best Kept Community Award for 2019.

The contest was organised by the Lincolnshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England to celebrate all the good things about local life.

Villages were judged on their overall appearance, green spaces, public premises, businesses, churches and community spirit.

Receiving the award this year was Deeping St James.

Deeping St James parish councillor Andrew Bowell said: "We feel really chuffed that we got perfect marks and the certificate will be put up on display.

"Villages were judged on their appearance, gardens and play equipment, as well as looking at the lake, down by the river and at the historic buildings."

Andrew added that while Deeping St James had won because it is a lovely village, residents had 'upped the ante' to ensure the best result, and hadn't known exactly when the judges would visit. "

The village scored 136 out of 150 in the final round of judging.

It was particularly praised for the Deeping Lakes Wildlife Area.

Judges recommended the village noticeboards are updated with better up to date information.

Deepings Library receives a boost.
