Ashwell Village Fete welcomes record crowd for Platinum Jubileee-themed return to Rutland
A record crowd turned out to welcome an old friend as Ashwell Village Fete returned for the first time since 2019 with a jubilee theme.
With last year's edition of the biannual event postponed because of covid restrictions, more than 2,000 visitors headed to Grange Farm on Sunday eager to make up for lost time.
"It was an amazing day," said host and co-organiser Emma Leeming.
"It was the sixth time we have held it and I don't think we have had bigger crowds.
"The atmosphere was amazing and everyone seemed to be having such a good time. People were so happy to be out again with no restrictions."
The Platinum Jubilee Ashwell Village Fete was opened by the Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Sarah Furness, and the High Sheriff of Rutland, Geoff Thompson.
A traditional programme of events included vintage cars, games, Punch and Judy, morris dancers, and a dog show featuring 14 prize classes, sponsored by HiLife Petcare and Oakham Veterinary Hospital.
Rutland Concert Band entertained the crowds as did local group, the Charleston Dancers, performing for just the second time.
There were 13 stalls and summer refreshments included afternoon tea, Pimm's, and Grange Farm's homemade ice cream.
And to mark the occasion, there was a children's coronation fancy dress parade.
"It is just old-fashioned fun and it shows there is still a big appetite for that," Emma added.
"There is a small committee of five of us who organise it, but there is also a huge team behind us and we are so grateful to everyone who helped make the day a success."
While the coffers are still being counted, the proceeds from the event will be split between Ashwell Village Hall, St Mary's Church, Ashwell, and Lincs and Notts Air Ambulance.
