Gallery: Waste Warriors campaign gathers pace as 2nd Stamford Town Scouts and staff from Waitrose get litter picking

Waste warriors have been out in force cleaning the streets and green spaces across Stamford.

Youngsters from the 2nd Stamford Town Scouts litter picked across the meadows on Saturday for their annual St George's Day celebrations.

Staff from Waitrose in Stamford also spent time cleaning up the town this week.

The company encourages each store to spend the equivalent of 40 working hours each year volunteering in the community.

Team leader Francesca Knight coordinated a team of 18 staff at the meadows on Tuesday. They were joined by customers to clear up the streets and car parks around the area.

Francesca said: "I love animals and the environment. Plastic has become such a big problem and I have been so inspired by Blue Planet to do something about it.

"This was a great opportunity to get lots of people involved."

Shoppers who took part in the litter pick each received a voucher for free coffee and cake at the supermarket after the event.

Four staff members from the Stamford Mercury joined the Waitrose team for an hour to support the clean up following the launch of our new campaign last week.

Mercury editor Kerry Coupe said: "The scouts and Waitrose staff have done a great job of cleaning up one of the most beautiful parts of town.

"We can't wait to hear from more Waste Warriors in the coming weeks."
