What good is Lincolnshire road safety campaign doing, asks letter writer

When I first arrived in Lincolnshire 1982, one of the road signs that welcomed you to the county was an indication of how many people had been killed on the roads that year compared to the last.

This information changed monthly so the council employs someone to drive round the county every month changing the signs. This is at some cost. It is still happening in 2022.

I have not researched the annual death rate but according to a sign I saw recently, the death rate in 2021 and 2022 was little different.

So, if the signage was designed to make drivers slow down or drive more responsibly, the death rate campaign isn’t working. Given there are other deaths in the county from other causes, particularly farm accidents, it begs the question why the council bothers with their road death count campaign? It might save the ratepayers some expense if the campaign ended!
