Wassailing in Stamford and other events across Bourne, Rutland and the Deepings in the next week

Friday, January 6

Oakham Art Group Winter Exhibition - Rutland County Museum in Catmose Street. Runs until January 9.

Chase the Goose’ family trail - £2. Lyveden New Bield. Runs until February 6.

Saturday, January 7

Nibble and Natter - Bourne Abbey Church Hall, 10am to midday. Stalls to include books, raffle and refreshments. Proceeds to Abbey Church.

Wassail - Stamford Community Orchard, end of Christ Church Close, 4.30pm. Join in a noisy old English custom to bring a good harvest of apples. With seasonal songs, cider, apple juice, brazier, Woven Chords choir, Rutland Morris and a fire juggler. Bring saucepans and wooden spoons to bang, a mug, torch, sparklers and ribbons.

Men Can Cook - 6pm for 6.30pm start, Great Casterton Church Hall (opposite The Crown in Great Casterton). Come and join us for an evening of food and fun when the men of the church supply a tasty menu. Raffle and bar. Fundraising for the church heating system.

The Rutland Group of The Hardy Plant Society - 7.30pm, Uppingham Methodist Church, Orange Street, LE15 9SQ. Nick Hamilton owner of Barnsdale Gardens will take as his subject ‘Essential Winter Trees and Shrubs’. Admission, for very welcome visitors is £5 with light refreshments included. Friday, January 13

Traditional French Dance - 7.30pm, Tinwell Village Hall. Featuring the Anglo-French duo of Cedric Martin from Alsace on accordion and Emily Bowden from Sheffield playing fiddle.

Deepings Heritage present a talk by Nicholas Watts on Fenland Farming, Water and Wildlife - Main Hall of the Community Centre, Market Deeping, 7.30pm. Admission £3.

Stamford Indoor Bowls Club Open Day - 10am to 4pm at the clubhouse off Exeter Gardens. Free. All ages welcome, no experience or equipment needed. Refreshments available.

The Adult Panto: Cinderella and her Naughty Buttons! - 7.30pm, Stamford Corn Exchange. The Market Theatre Company are out to corrupt another fairytale classic beyond recognition with an evening of corny jokes, raunchy plots and blatant sexual innuendo using a minimum of set props and costume. Sunday, January 15

Stamford Ramblers walk - 10am, from Wakerley Great Wood. An undulating nine mile walk following the road into Wakerley village to pick up the Rutland Round to Duddington via the hamlet of Tixover. We cross the A43 and steadily head uphill to enter Fineshade Woods via the North Spinney and continue through the woods until we get to Top Lodge for a lunch stop. The route then passes Fineshade Abbey, recrossing the A43 and back into Wakerley Great Wood and the car park. Underfoot is mostly well trodden paths and roadways.
