Rutland Hall Hotel and Spa in Barnsdale wins Large Business of the Year at the Rutland & Stamford Mercury Business Awards

During the coronavirus pandemic, the new owners of Rutland Hall Hotel - named Large Business of the Year at the Mercury Business Awards 2022 on Friday - were working on a vision.

Husband and wife team Dineshbhai and Savitaben Patel purchased the former Barnsdale Hall Hotel on the north shore of Rutland Water in 2020 and soon began to refurbish the events venue with 66 bedrooms and timeshare apartments in the grounds. Meanwhile, they drew on the experience of the existing team while bringing in new talent and now have a team of about 120 working at the hotel.

Executive head chef, Sumit Chakrabarty, joined at the start of their renovation project, having previously worked in Michelin starred restaurants run by Gordon Ramsey and Michel Roux Jr.

Expressing his delight at Rutland Hall Hotel and Spa being named Large Business of the Year, he said: “The team is growing, but we put quality before growth, and so we’re making sure the product we offer suits the customers and that our team shares that vision - that culture of quality.

“We want to be the best in the area, and then the country, but we also want to be a ‘family’ place and employ people with talent, helping them to grow their experience by working alongside people who already have it.

“It’s about having a good mixture of talent, enthusiasm and experience in the team.”

Joanne White, managing director at Rutland Hall Hotel and Spa, said they felt “honoured” to have won, adding: “It is acknowledgement of the hard work of our colleagues in the team, and of the owners who have made significant investment into the business to make sure the dream they had has come together.

“Our people are at the forefront of what we do as a business, so I’d like to say a huge thank you to them all.

“Thanks also to the judges, who took the time to visit us and ultimately chose us as their winners.

“Lastly, a huge congratulations to all our fellow nominees and winners - we were in excellent company.”

Also shortlisted in the Large Business of the Year category, which was sponsored and judged by Chattertons Solicitors and Wealth Management, were Clarity Stack, the business intelligence firm based in Warmington, and MorePeople, the specialist recruitment company located in Cherryholt Road, Stamford.

Matt Fowler, a partner at Stamford-based Chattertons said: “The winner demonstrated an overriding sense of the want and need to invest in its people. This has been a real driver for change and they have a clear vision of growth. They achieved a sense of togetherness and family, which can be a really hard thing to do.”
