Success at the English Schools Athletics Championships for Lawson Capes and Sean O’Donnell
Athlete Lawson Capes has completed a record-breaking run of results by being crowned English Schools champion for the third successive season.
The teenager had started off on his streak of success on the track and field circuit by setting a new competition record at the Eastern Championships in Cambridge.
He threw 17.52m in the shot to break the record from 2005 which was set by Dan Tinkler who was another Capes camp athlete.
Lawson also set a new discus personal best of 47.57m to take both Eastern titles.
He was then competing in the English Schools Team Cup final where he captained an Under 16 boys squad from Bourne Grammar School against some of the best private schools in the country.
As an Under 16 age group, the shot was a 4kg instead of his usual 5kg and Lawson set a new championship record with 19.15m which shattered the previous record of 17.41m set in 2001.
As this was a team event, he also won the 100m in 11.16 seconds.
Attention then turned to this weekend's prestigious English Schools event at Birmingham's Alexander Stadium.
Lawson again took gold for the third year in a row with the 5kg shot in his first year in the Under 17 age group with a throw of 17.56m which earns him his third international appearance of the season.
He travels to Carmarthen in Wales tomorrow (Friday) to compete against the home nations and then returns next week to Birmingham for the England Athletics national event.
There was a silver lining for Casterton College pupil Sean O'Donnell at the English Schools Championships in Birmingham.
The sprinter set a new personal best of 10.78secs in the heats of the 100m event held at the Alexandra Stadium
He then finished second in the final to return home with the silver medal which has secured selection for the England team for this weekend's Schools International Athletic Board meeting in Wales.
He then heads off to the Republic of Ireland to race in Tullamore where he is hoping to land the 100m and 200m titles.
